Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act

Are Miami to Havana Flights in the Forseeable Future?

Call me a rebel, but I have always wanted to visit Cuba.

I learned about the 1963 trade embargo and subsequent travel ban when I was just a freshman in high school. Since then, I have been studying the Cuban culture and have been obsessed with the prospect of visiting there. I remember thinking that the travel ban was counter-productive, and I wondered if the ban would ever be lifted -- at least during my lifetime. Well now, that may actually happen!

Coined the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act, a bill that is being debated in both the House and Senate has some very broad congressional backing and the support of the Cuban-American community. The language of the bill in debate is interesting, to say the least. The bill "forbids the President to regulate or prohibit, directly or indirectly, travel to or from Cuba by United States citizens or legal residents.” It also repeals all previously declared travel restrictions. Cool!

Cuba is only 70 miles from the southern most point in Florida. Because of it's proximity and more importantly it's mystery, Cuba travel will be in very high demand. As the US begins to insert it's cultural influences on Cuba, democracy and even a Major League Baseball team in Havana may be here sooner than you think.

I hope it passes.

So here are some questions to ponder...

1. Are Miami to Havana Flights in the foreseeable Future?

2. Would you visit Cuba if the travel ban were to be lifted?

3. Was the policy necessary or counter-productive?

4. Will a US cultural invasion (tourism) lead to democracy in Cuba?

What say you??

I wonder if there's more danger for drug smuggling if we lift the travel ban...

I hope it is lifted! I was lucky enough to visit Cuba a number of years ago and loved it!It seems absurd that US citizens are banned from visiting a country that has so much to offer and is at their doorstep. Not to mind the positive affect it could have on the Cuban economy.

I couldn't agree more Kev, which is why I've always thought this policy was counterproductive.

As it should be lifted. America shouldn't be holding anything against Cuba anyway. I am wondering if they will lift the ban on prescription drugs. I Americans can buythe drugs from there, there will be more Americans that can deal with their ailments and LIVE longer. Why doesn't Congressman want that? Think....Good hub though.

I would love to visit this sleepy Island myself. It looks like it would be a good atmosphere.

It would be beneficial for both sides I think to open up to each other. The country really is beautiful and so are the people.
