Prepaid Cards are a Good Alternative to Credit Cards

Prepaid credit cards instead of traditional credit cards for students? Despite normal credit cards being a bad idea, there is a new type of credit card on the market these days that is being targeted to children.

These credit cards are known as prepaid cards, and they have most of the same functions as a credit card - except that you deposit money on the card (similar to the way you put money on a mobile phone).

Instead of giving your child a traditional credit card, you can put a certain amount of money on the prepaid card each week or month for the child to use - much like an allowance.

After all, you'll have a smaller quantity of cards to manage and your interest rate might even improve. So why shouldn't do this? The credit reporting agencies would much rather see five small balance cards than one high balance account. It might be easier for you to manage a single account but your credit score will very likely take a ding if you choose to do this. A word to the wise... since getting a car loan, and any loan for that matter, is based on your credit score, it's important to manage everything that might affect that score negatively.
